Flashing calculator: calculate sheet metal flashing in 15 seconds

Short answer

A flashing calculator is a tool that automatically calculates, for sheet metal flashings (eaves flashing, sill flashing, gutters, ridge caps), the number of pieces needed, the length of each piece including the joint overlap, the blank width, metal usage and the customer price. In the calculator below, choose the profile type and enter the length - the result appears instantly and you can see how the installer fits it on the house.

How does flashing calculation work?

The calculation has 5 steps. By hand it takes 20-30 minutes, and every step is a chance to make a mistake; TunkaForm does them all at once.

  • A flashing template is selected - its blank width (for example, 250 mm) and bend angles are already in the library.
  • The run length is entered (for example, 12 m) and divided into equal pieces (12 m → 6 × 2 m).
  • A joint (lock) overlap is added to each piece - usually 4 cm: 2.00 m → 2.04 m.
  • The metal area is calculated: blank width × total length of the pieces (0.25 m × 12.24 m ≈ 3.06 m²).
  • Sheet or coil usage and the final customer price are shown.

The 3 most expensive mistakes in manual calculation

Sheet metal companies mostly lose money through small mistakes - and they repeat with every order.

  • Forgetting the joint overlap: pieces come out short, have to be cut again, and metal is wasted.
  • Not fitting the blank width to the sheet width: a 1250 mm sheet yields 4 strips of 300 mm with 50 mm of waste, but 5 strips of 250 mm with no waste.
  • Quoting with an old material price or an old dollar rate: every order closes at a loss.

01

What is blank width?

Blank width is the width of the flat strip before the flashing is bent, i.e. the sum of all its bent segments. For example, if the blank width of an eaves flashing is 250 mm, a 1250 mm sheet is cut into 5 strips with no waste.

02

How much joint overlap is needed?

To let the pieces slot into each other, usually 4 cm of overlap is added to each piece. TunkaForm accounts for this automatically for every profile.

03

Is the calculator free?

The demo calculator on the website is free. The full version includes 22+ profiles, conversion to an order, automatic metal deduction from inventory and a drawing for the worker - we'll show it using your own company's example in a free demo.

04

Can I add my own profile?

Yes. On the Business plan, your custom profiles and calculation formulas are added to the system for you.
